In 1930, William J. Shaw, a prominent American living in the Philippines founded the club along with a small group of Filipino golfers. He was previously a member of the Manila Golf Club. However, he left due to his disapproval of the treatment of Larry Montes, champion of the 1929 Philippine Open. Shaw reportedly said, “I don’t care if he were a beggar in Quiapo Church. So long as he is the champion, he sits with us”.
16-year-old caddie, Larry Montes won the tournament but was denied in partaking in the celebration. Manila Golf Club rules back then did not allow caddies in the clubhouse. William Shaw decided to establish his own golf club which prohibited discrimination. Anyone, regardless of their status or ethnicity is free to participate in the game of golf.
The construction of the first 18-holes began in 1931 which later became known as the East Course. Shaw then purchased the land adjoining the first 18-holes, and constructed another 18-hole course. This later became known as the West Course. The name, “Wack Wack” allegedly derives from the sound made by crows or “uwak” commonly found in the area.
Today, Wack Wack Golf and Country Club still stands along Shaw Boulevard, aptly named after its founder, in Mandaluyong City. It is one of the best and most recognized golf courses in the country and in all of Asia. The club’s first-rate facilities include a driving range, a clinic, a gym, restaurants, function rooms, and a swimming pool. This makes the club perfect for leisure and events for families and gatherings. It has hosted various prestigious tournaments, particularly the Philippine Open numerous times up until 2014.
